In a recent development， Russia’s Federal Tax Service has established a national registry for crypto miners since November 2024， requiring miners to submit detailed registration requests. The tax agency has attempted to assuage fears by claiming that the data is stored in a ‘separate internal protected system’ with restricted access. In 2024， Roskomnadzor recorded 135 data leaks affecting over 710 million Russian records， underlining the persistent cybersecurity challenges.
While the crypto mining sector is not directly under international sanctions， previous incidents demonstrate the industry’s vulnerability. In April 2022， the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned BitRiver AG， marking the first time a crypto mining company faced such action. By March 2024， OFAC had expanded its reach， targeting 13 Russian entities involved in crypto services for sanctions evasion.
